Overview

—> This case study outlines the design of an AI-enhanced In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system for Stellantis, a global automotive leader. The system integrates voice and gesture controls, predictive navigation, and personalized entertainment, prioritizing safety and convenience for drivers. The goal for my team and I was to create an intuitive, hands-free interface that enhances the driving experience while ensuring efficiency and enjoyment.

Problem Statement

—> We were presented with three problem statements from our client, Stellantis, which apply across all of their automotive brands. After careful consideration, we selected the following problem statement to focus on: AI-Enhanced IVI System for Safety and Convenience.

Design Decisions

—> For this project, my partner and I chose the 2025 DS Automobiles DS7 Crossback as our design inspiration, as DS Automobiles, a premium brand under Stellantis, is known for its luxury, innovation, and sophisticated design. The goal was to develop an innovative In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system for 2030, leveraging AI, machine learning, and smart technology to enhance the user experience.

User Testing & Feedback —>

Testing Tasks:

  1. Add a New Profile: You're a new passenger in the car; how can you add a new profile?

  2. Change Music Verbally: You're driving on the highway; how would you change the music verbally?

  3. Adjust Interior Lighting: Change the interior lighting to match the weather.

Results:

  • Task 1 (Add a New Profile):
    Outcome: Successful
Details: The user located the "profile selector" screen and identified the "+" icon on the right-hand side as the option to add a new profile.

  • Task 2 (Change Music Verbally):
    Outcome: Successful
Details: The user correctly identified the voice assistant icon located in the center of the app selector and knew to tap it to change the music verbally.

  • Task 3 (Adjust Interior Lighting):
    Outcome: Unsuccessful
Details: The user was unable to change the interior lighting to match the weather, as the concept of "weather" was unclear within the UI.

Key Takeaways:

  • Successes: Tasks 1 and 2 were completed successfully, which indicates the user can easily navigate to core functionalities.

  • Challenges: Task 3 revealed that the term "weather" may need clarification or further design adjustments to improve user understanding and interaction with the lighting controls.

Style Guide —>

This style guide supports the premium and innovative experience expected from DS Automobiles while ensuring functionality and clarity across all interface elements.

  • Brand Alignment: Features DS Automobiles' iconic red (Hex: #A7000D) and the modern Inter typeface to reflect the brand’s bold, elegant identity.

  • Consistency: Defines a unified visual language for colors, typography, buttons, components, and icons to ensure a seamless interface.

  • Usability: Balances a minimalist, dark-themed design with accessible, intuitive interactions and clearly defined elements.

Final Designs —>

The finalized designs show a clear evolution from the concept mockups, with significant improvements in information architecture and visual design. The layout was restructured to prioritize clarity and accessibility, ensuring information is logically grouped and easy to navigate. Visually, the designs embraced a more polished and cohesive aesthetic, refining typography, iconography, and the DS Automobiles color palette to align with the brand’s identity. These changes transformed the mockups’ conceptual ideas into a functional, visually engaging interface that enhances the user experience.

  • The polished interface seamlessly integrates AI-driven features, such as personalized profiles and smart climate controls, delivering both convenience and a premium in-vehicle experience.

  • There is clearer typography, refined icons, and enhanced use of DS Automobiles’ signature aesthetic, prioritize safety through clarity and reduce driver distraction.

  • Critical features are easily accessible and intuitively organized.
